Legal Materials Added to WVNCC Library

Posted 07/12/12

Through the efforts of Ohio County Circuit Clerk Brenda Miller, students at West Virginia Northern Community College and the public now have ready access to numerous books of legal materials in the Wheeling campus library.

Working with the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals via the Ohio County Law Library, since closed, Miller facilitated the donation of several sets of “law books” to the college library.

According to John Plesa, WVNCC paralegal instructor and program director, Miller contacted the college when the Ohio County Law Library was being readied to close and met with him and other representatives from the college, including President Martin J. Olshinsky; Dr. Vicki Riley, vice president of academic affairs; Division Chair Marian Grubor and Library Director Pat Stroud.

Miller said when she was informed the law library was to be closed, she talked with West Virginia Supreme Court Administrator Steve Canterbury, asking that the books be donated to local colleges.

As a member of the WVNCC Paralegal Program Advisory Committee, Miller said she was aware specifically of the need for the books at Northern. Others receiving books from the Ohio County Law Library, she added, were the West Virginia Business College and the West Virginia University College of Law.

Miller explained the Ohio County Law Library was located near her offices on the fourth floor of the City-County Building in downtown Wheeling. “I believe with our law books still being so close, access to these few hundred volumes will be valuable to the public and helpful to the students,” she said.

WVNCC Foundation Executive Director Emily Fisher expressed thanks to the West Virginia Supreme Court administrator for the donation of the books valued at nearly $16,000. The books now in the WVNCC Wheeling campus library are American Jurisprudence 2nd Legal Encyclopedia (Complete Set), American Jurisprudence Practice Pleading Forms (Complete Set) and American Jurisprudence Legal Forms Set (Complete Set).
