WVNCC Foundation Sponsors 5K Race

Posted 03/27/14

Runners and walkers of the Upper Ohio Valley are invited to participate in West Virginia Northern Community College Foundation’s first “Northern Lights Partnering for Education 5K Race” beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 3, in downtown Wheeling.

Kim McCluskey, Foundation board member and race director, said purpose of the race is to raise scholarship funds for Northern students. The race will begin in the 1600 block of Market Street and “will thread its way along the scenic Heritage Port Trail adjoining the Ohio River,” McCluskey said. He added, “The course is basically flat so that all age groups should find it easy. The weather on May 3 should be ideal for running and walking, not too hot and not too cold.”

Participants may register for the race at the college’s new Applied Technology Center at the corner of 16th and Market streets from 7-10 p.m. May 2 or from 7-8:15 a.m. the morning of the race. Registration forms are available in the Institutional Advancement office of Rana Spurlock in the B&O Building and also may be accessed online at www.wvncc.edu/about/northern-lights-partnering-for-education-5k/4315.

The race will conclude in the plaza in front of the college’s B&O Building and participants will be directed into the auditorium for food, refreshments, music, door prizes and awards. Plaques will be awarded to the top three overall male and female runners and top three overall male and female walkers. Medallions will be given to the top three male and female runners and walkers in each of the following age categories: 14 and under, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70-79, and 80+.
“Serious runners and walkers will be glad to know that the Northern Lights 5K Race is part of the Health Plan of the Upper Ohio Valley’s Grand Prix Series,” one of 30 such races throughout the Ohio Valley, McCluskey explained. More information is available by contacting McCluskey at mccluskey@wesbanco.com or by phone at 304-312-2899.
