West Virginia Northern Community College (WVNCC) will postpone its May 15, Spring Commencement and will move all summer classes online. WVNCC will have a tribute video that they will release on May 15, but the ceremony has been moved to an undetermined date in the future. The decision was announced by the College’s President, Dr. Daniel Mosser via video on the College’s social media channels and was emailed to students.

The College surveyed the graduating class before making their final decision to determine if students would prefer a virtual ceremony on May 15, or hold a ceremony for students in the future. Overwhelmingly, the students elected to have a ceremony when it is safe again for people to gather.

“I was looking especially forward to Commencement, as it would be my first as the president of this esteemed College,” commented Mosser. “However, given the current situation with the Coronavirus and CDC recommendations, we had to make the difficult decision to postpone our regular Commencement exercises scheduled on May 15. This pandemic has left us no other choice and this breaks my heart for each and every student.”

The College did assure each student they would still graduate on time and that upon successful completion of spring courses needed to fulfill their degree requirements, they will be issued their degree and their transcript will reflect the conferring of their earned academic credentials.

“Our students have worked extremely hard and deserve a ceremony with all the pomp and circumstance,” added Mosser. “My hope is that they will find that this experience right now will help shape them for the challenges that lie ahead and they will remember what it took to conquer this adversity. They have shown great resilience and perseverance during this time.”

WVNCC also announced that all summer classes, which begin on May 26, will now be online. Students can still register for the summer semester at www.wvncc.edu
