WVNCC to Host Underground Railroad Event

Posted 01/17/13

The Underground Railroad and its connection to the Upper Ohio Valley will be discussed during a special Lunch and Learn presentation starting at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, at the Wheeling campus of West Virginia Northern Community College.

Presenter will be Dr. John Mattox, curator of the Underground Railroad Museum in Flushing. The free and open to the public Lunch and Learn event will be held in the B&O Building auditorium on the downtown Wheeling campus, 1704 Market St.

Lunch will be served beginning at 11 a.m. and Mattox will speak at 11:30 a.m. The event is part of WVNCC’s commemoration of the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Members of the public wishing to attend are asked to provide an RSVP by Jan. 23 to Ida Williams, WVNCC Student Activities program coordinator, by calling 304-214-8917 or by emailing her at iwilliams@wvncc.edu.

Mattox explains the Underground Railroad Museum features an extensive collection of publications, books, memorabilia and other articles. The exhibits portray what is known about slavery and the Underground Railroad in Ohio and features an understanding of the culture in the 1800s.
