Fifteen West Virginia Northern Community College (WVNCC) radiography students recently participated in a virtual essay and exhibit competition that was sponsored by the West Virginia Society of Radiologic Technologists Conference. One WVNCC student, Amanda Barath, won third place in the essay competition for her research paper entitled, “The Radiologic Role in Cochlear Implantation.”

Barath, from Bridgeport, Ohio, wrote her award-winning essay on cochlear implants, which are a surgical option for patients with sensorineural hearing loss. The tiny device not only gives patients the sense of sound, but also improves their quality of life. Barath’s paper focused on the relationship between the two subjects to help show how important radiology is in various aspects of the medical field.

“I was very excited when I found out my essay won third place,” commented Barath. “It definitely wasn’t something I was expecting.”

WVNCC Radiography Program Director, Misty Kahl, added, “Although we were disappointed that the annual WVSRT Conference had to be cancelled, due to COVID-19 restrictions, we were glad that our students were at least able to participate in the essay and exhibit competitions virtually. They all did a great job. Amanda’s essay on “The Radiologic Role in the Assessment of Cochlear Implants” was well written and very informative.  Winning third place in the state is quite an accomplishment and we couldn’t be happier for her!”

WVNCC's Radiography Program is a 21-month A.A.S degree program that is fully accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology.  Applications are currently being accepted until June 10, 2021.  Information regarding admissions requirements can be found at https://www.wvncc.edu/programs/radiography-a.a.s./1108.
